Lush Lawns
Your complete spring checklist 🌱
1
Remove dead grass and debris. If thatch is over ½ inch, dethatch with a power rake. This lets water and nutrients reach the roots.
2
A $15 soil test tells you exactly what your lawn needs. Most lawns want pH 6.0–7.0. Adjust with lime (acidic) or sulfur (alkaline).
3
If your lawn gets heavy foot traffic, core aerate in spring. This reduces compaction and helps roots grow deeper. Rent an aerator for ~$70/day.
4
Use a slow-release fertilizer when soil temps hit 55°F. Don't over-apply — follow the bag rate. One application now fuels growth for 8–10 weeks.
5
Fill in thin or bare areas now. Choose seed that matches your existing grass type. Keep newly seeded areas moist for 2–3 weeks.
